Dave Bruer went to the University of Illinois to get a Masters degree in electrical engineering - electronic design and found himself in Los Angeles working in aerospace. He was twice honoured by the US government for significant electronics design. In 1981 he came to New Zealand to begin a solar energy company. He contracted with the NZ government for 5 years to run the "Design to the Sun" project, to write a design manual for architects and promote passive solar design in New Zealand. He taught at the University of Auckland School of Architecture. Today he is the Founding Director of Anew NZ, a charitable trust that is leading a national initiative called "What Matters Most to New Zealanders".
