Summer swimming

Friday 01/12/2023

Every year we lose friends and whānau to our rivers, oceans and swimming pools and a majority of these deaths are preventable. People across all age groups lose their life in the water and males are four times more likely to drown than females. Plenty of fatal accidents begin with “it won’t happen to me”, and having fun in the water means being serious about water safety. Let’s make this summer memorable for the right reasons - Supervise little ones around water, wear a life jacket when fishing/ boating and remember to stop, look and think before getting in the water.

Here are some great community resources:

  • Wai Wise is a free, half day programme open to the Indian community (aged 15+) to increase knowledge and awareness of the different and unique water environments we are surrounded by in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. Sign up at enrolmy.com

  • Water Safety NZ has tips for staying safe around rivers, at beaches, while boating, and when collecting seafood/ kaimoana

  • Safeswim provides up-to-the-minute information on water quality and swimming conditions at your favourite spots.
